Naming the Brainchild
If possible, optimally

(2010)

Note by John Zube

With how few words can one express the main ideas of panarchism and panarchy best and which version would appeal to the largest number of people?
The terms “panarchy” and “panarchism” are making their rounds on the Internet - but are also already widely misunderstood and also misapplied in quite a different sense from the one that de Puydt has given them. Thus we should always be on the lookout for better terms.

So far most of the alphabetized terms below were extracted from my file Pan A to Z.
I also added a short and compacted list of related terms from the same source.

Please add the first user, if known to you.
Also add any pro and con comments that you wish to enter, with or without name or initials.

Some suggestions noted now or made before.
Add your own and also objections.

Abolitionism towards territorialism.

Agorism.

ALL FORMS OF ANARCHISM ONLY FOR ALL FORMS OF ANARCHISTS AND ALL KINDS OF STATISM ONLY FOR ALL KINDS OF STATISTS.

Allegiance to self-chosen societies only.

Alternative institutions.

Alternative social contract societies. and laissez faire marketeers fail, like e.g. Bastiat and Ayn Rand, Hayek and Mises did, to apply freedom to experiment and to choose - to governmental experiments and choice among governments - which can be fully free and developed only on the basis of exterritorial autonomy - at least for all "package deal" protective communities and associations which people may still want instead of the present States and governments. - J.Z. 25.7.92, 7.1.93. - But they must be subjected to the primary requirement of voluntarism, of individual choice.

ANTERRITORIALISM, ANTERRITORIALIST, ANTERRITORIAL Anterritorial self-determination vs. territorialism.

Anti-monopolism in every sphere.

ANTI-TERRITORIALISM.

ANTI-TRUST RULINGS AGAINST GOVERNMENTS: Vernor Vinge, Conquest by Default, ANALOG, May 68, plan 237, page 68, in ON PANARCHY III, in PP 507.

ASSOCIATIONAL DIVERSITY.

ASSOCIATIONISM, EVEN OF THE EXTERRITORIAL AUTONOMY KIND, ALL BY INDIVIDUAL CHOICE, STARTING WITH INDIVIDUAL SECESSIONISM FROM EXISTING STATES.

ASSOCIATIONISM: Voluntary & Exterritorial vs. Compulsory & Territorial, in every sphere, with no exception for "public affairs" and "public institutions": Page 21, in ON PANARCHY I, in PP 505.

A-TERRITORIAL SELF-GOVERNMENT

A-TERRITORIAL, AN-TERRITORIAL OR NON-TERRITORIAL? A-TERRITORIALISM, AN-TERRITORIALISM  OR NON-TERRITORIALISM? A-TERRITORIALIST, AN-TERRITORIALIST OR NON-TERRITORIALIST? - The "a" version has the advantage of being the shortest. It is not necessarily the clearest, although used in terms like apolitical and asexual. In relation to panarchism and anarchism I prefer the "an" version as a construct with a different meaning to that of anarchism. It would allow archism but only on a voluntary and non-territorial basis. Non-geographical is also a misleading term, since it relates to the science of geography and cartography rather than to the organization of man - apart form different colors on charts, indicating territorial States. - J.Z., 9.10.04.

Aterritorialism.

AUTARCHY. In Robert LeFevre's meaning.

Autonomous self-help societies of volunteers.

Autonomy for foreigners, aliens, dissenters, minorities, all doing only their own things for and to themselves.

AUTONOMY, Comprehensive & Exterritorial for Volunteers only, vs. all too Limited Autonomy Granted by Territorial Governments.

AUTONOMY, FULL AUTONOMY, NON-GEOGRAPHICAL????

Biarchy as a first step? BIARCHY, by ALAN THORNTON: n.d., 8pp, with 5pp of comments by John Zube, 158, in ON PANARCHY XVII, in PP 1,051. - Panarchism confined to two panarchies only. Perhaps suitable as a beginning, with the major two parties. - J.Z., 28.8.04.

BIODIVERSITY & PANARCHY: Seeing that most animals and even insects, microbes and plants, live under a form of panarchism, in the same area, admittedly not always peaceful, in the same area, why should not man be able to do so and really preserve the peace between human beings in this way? - Why should man subject himself to territorial statism? - J.Z., 28.8.04.

COOPERATION, INDIVIDUALISTIC.

PEOPLE UNDER GENUINE SELF-GOVERNMENT: “The Commonwealth is the people’s affair; moreover, a people is not every group of men brought together in any way, but a group of many men associated by consent to law and by community of interest.” - Cicero, De Republica, I/25.

POLITICIANS AND POLITICAL INSTITUTIONS WITHOUT TERRITORIAL MONOPOLIES.

POLITICIANS & THEIR VOLUNTARY FOLLOWERS & SUBJECTS, ALL WITHOUT TERRITORIAL MONOPOLIES: I have nothing against politicians - as long as they do not monopolize certain activities and do victimize only their own followers, instead of most people in a whole country for the benefit of politicians, bureaucrats and their favourites. - J.Z., 15.7.87, 20.9.04.

POLYARCHY (see: www.polyarchy.org)

One by one by one." - Ferguson, The Aquarian Conspiracy, 263.  - Panarchism aims to realize the dropping out option as well as quite free associationism in every sphere. - J.Z., 20.9.04.

Power over the fate of others ought to be replaced by power over the own life and affairs. - J.Z., 20.9.04.

POWER, PEOPLE & INDIVIDUALS: All power not to the people but to the individual - over their own affairs, and to their voluntary associations, away from all territorial government and this under full exterritorial autonomy and personal laws, constitutions and jurisdictions. PRIVATIZATION OF GOVERNMENTS. Privatize governments, i.e., turn them into voluntary affairs and free and competitive enterprises - based only upon exterritorial autonomy and voluntary membership. That requires that individuals are and remain free to secede from them and to conclude other societal arrangements for themselves, i.e., to live under personal rather than territorial laws and rules. - J.Z., 26.2.94, 9.1.99.

Privatization: COMPREHENSIVE PRIVATIZATION OF ALL STATE ACTIVITIES & INSTITUTIONS.

RELATED TERMS & IDEAS, ARGUMENTS, PROVERBS, SAYINGS, QUOTES, OPINIONS ON EXTRATERRITORIALITY, GEOGRAPHICAL SECESSIONISM, MINI-TERRITORIES, A-TERRITORIALITY, INDIVIDUAL SECESSIONISM, NON-TERRITORIAL DECENTRALIZATION, DECENTRALISATION, PANARCHISTIC TOLERANCE & SELF-GOVERNMENT, TRIBALISM ETC.

Some related terms do not express the personal law aspects of panarchism but amount merely to autonomy for mini-territories or geographical secessionism and autonomy: Extraterritoriality of embassies, decentralization of the conventional type, geographical and with limited autonomy, tribalism with native land claims, fragmentation, foreign concessions. - Numerous old and new freedom proverbs, slogans and ideals have already anticipated this freedom framework and opportunity for all.

E.g.: "Don't fence me in!" - "I did it my way!" - - "We must create sanctuaries for social imagination." (Alvin Toffler, Future Shock, 1970, quoted by M. Ferguson, The Aquarian Conspiracy, p. 331.) - "To each his own." (the old Latin: "Suum cuique". - "Equal liberty for all.". "Equal rights for all." "No privileges or monopolies for anyone!" "Self-government", "self-determination", "independence", "opting out", "alternative institutions", "experimental freedom", "minority autonomy". "Free choice in everything", "freedom of action", "decentralization", "self-management", "self-control", "self-discipline", "free societies", "intentional communities", "utopias" for volunteers, "individual sovereignty", "consumer sovereignty", "competition", "cooperation", "voluntarism", "voluntaryism", "autonomy", "autarchy" (in Robert LeFevre's meaning), "anarchism", "individualism", "libertarianism", "capitalism", "collectivism", "socialism", "tolerance", "mutualism", "radicalism", "freedom of association", "freedom to dissociate oneself", "opting out", "enfranchisement", "liberation", "the one-man revolution". "Mutual convenience relationships" vs. "single convenience relationships" (Don Werkheiser). "No one is good enough to rule any other man without his consent." "Follow your own drummer!" Voluntary government. Self-Help in Every Sphere, Exterritorial Associationism. Choice among Governments and Societies. Competing Social Contract Package Deals, spontaneous cooperation, Household Government (Chaitlin), Optional Law (Rex Gordon), tribalism, freedom of choice, resigning one's commission. Abdication (not only for rulers but also for voters!). "Don't fence me in!" - "Neither victims nor executioners." - Albert Camus, essay title. - Compare: Neither master nor slave. Neither anvil nor hammer. Neither rule nor be ruled. “Il faut cultiver notre jardin.” (Voltaire) - Self-realization, self-enactment (Oakshott). - See also under: NAMES.

I take this opportunity to add, from my Pan AZ file my still very incomplete listing of start-up suggestions.

By all means, do add your own and also your criticism.

See also my book draft summarized by Gian Piero de Bellis on www.panarchy.org.

Otherwise, I refer to my two peace books on www.butterbach.net.

We are still very far from having fully explored or even listed all these options or suggestions.

I intend to work further on my panarchist bibliography and panarchist A to Z file.

Any input is welcomed.

But before that, I will work further on my free banking A to Z file, towards an alphabetized handbook. A long but still very incomplete and insufficiently edited beginning of notes towards it is also on www.butterbach.net. J.Z., 14.8.10.

START-UP OPPORTUNITIES FOR PANARCHISM: See: Opportunities, War & Peace Aims, Revolution Program, monetary revolution, tax strikes, voluntary taxation, Secessionism - individual and group secessionism, International Federation of Minorities favouring personal law communities of volunteers, Parties, ON PANARCHY encyclopaedia, Dropping out point by point: Private Education, Free Banking, Private Insurance, Arbitration Courts, Alternative Institutions. In very general terms: Extending the principles of tolerance and freedom of action and experimentation into spheres so far preempted by territorial governments. This could be done e.g. via new declarations of individual rights and liberties. Educational start-ups: Freedom in education, a genuinely cultural revolution, including e.g. Ideas Archive, Refutations Encyclopaedia, Open Air Speaking Centers, Discussion Centers, Comprehensive Publishing using alternative media like microfiche, floppies, CDs,  a general libertarian encyclopaedia, a libertarian library - selling cheap duplicates in alternative media, libertarian bibliography, abstracts, reviews, indexes, directories, flow-chart discussions, using all IN options, but without relying on them alone. Starting a new science of politics, one not confined to territorialism. Minorities ought to made enlightened enough to become the first to reject, together with all other minorities, territorial rule and territorial aspirations. Governments-in-exile, all to be fully recognized as representing all their own volunteers - wherever they might be living. International treaties granting exterritorial autonomy to all volunteer communities. Revolutions: According to Johann Gottlieb Fichte (1793 book on the French Revolution), all revolutions are already characterized by individual and group secessionism and alternative revolutionary institutions. Alas, operated mainly by territorialists, they neglect their exterritorial alternatives, which would make their revolutions relatively easy and lastingly effective - even though only for their own affairs, while others would conduct their own revolutions, with their own radical changes, whether conservative, reactionary or "progressive". Revolutions aiming at exterritorial autonomy for all dissenters would be genuinely anarchist and libertarian revolutions and would make the achievement of various forms of anarchism and of libertarianism, all only for their followers, relatively easy. By denying themselves this opportunity they are their own worst enemies. Panarchism could be imposed by a victorious government upon the people of a defeated government, in order to make sure that no new territorial government could arise and become aggressive again.  Alas, the Allies failed to impose this kind of peaceful condition upon Germany after WW I and WW II.  Extending the principles of free enterprise, free contracts, free competition, as applied by business enterprises, charities, insurance companies and protective services. Extending the internal autonomy of national and international corporations, societies and companies, without any privileges, monopolies and subsidies by any territorial governments. Extending the principles and proposals of Jerome Internoscia in his New Code of International Law, 1910, reproduced in my PEACE PLANS series. An ideal militia to be started to protect all individual rights and liberties, including the panarchic and monetary freedom ones. The militia itself to be exterritorially autonomous, locally, nation-wide and internationally. The main rights it should defend would be individual secessionism and voluntary association to exterritorially autonomous communities. Decentralization embracing the exterritorial options, not only the territorial ones. This might, however unlikely, start with some geographical secessions within which exterritorial secessions are also permitted. (Not outlawed, like the Biafrans did when they tried to secede from Nigeria.) Mere public declarations of intentions for future tolerant and voluntaristic societies, that would permit individuals and groups to secede, could already become influential. Comprehensive history of personal laws and exterritorially autonomous communities. Resistance with a genuinely libertarian and tolerant program for the future. Libertarian Futurism & Utopism. Panarchistic SF literature. - You add your own suggestions! - J.Z., 21.9.04.
